- Mt. Shinmoe (Shinmoe-dake) erupted yesterday. It’s in Kirishima-Yaku National Park on Kyushu, Japan’s southern main island, which I visited earlier this month researching for Lonely Planet – no sign of danger then. There have been no reported injuries, but planes and trains are not running, the noise has been fearsome, and the visuals are a reminder that there’s something bigger than us out there.
