
RyanAir and easyJet are among the first airlines to charge fees for baggage and more. US carriers have followed.
One the one hand, I cringe every time I pay to check a suitcase or buy a sandwich on board an airplane. On the other hand, I prefer my airlines solvent.
Turns out that one helps the other. A lot. Among the 47 airlines reporting, ancillary revenues – basically anything that’s not a ticket – totaled $21.46 billion in 2010. That’s nearly double the figure from 2008.
