Meditations On America: The Man In The Rock, Big Sky, Montana

I knew that Montana was called Big Sky Country, but I always assumed that was just a nickname on license plates. It wasn’t until I came here that I learned that Big Sky is a real place, a ski town with nice hotels and shops, an upscale guest ranch and lots of vacation homes. In this summer of COVID-19, it felt almost sleepy, and that was just fine with me.

I found myself hiking to Ousel Falls, on the outskirts of town along a river with a gangly name, the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin. The river is a rager, but it’s just the appetizer before the main course, the namesake falls, the farthest point of the 1.6-mile round trip.
